My first experience in working with a child with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) was remarkably successful. My client, Aaron, was 7 years old at the time I met him and used only one or two word approximations consistently. From the first session to the last, Aaron responded beautifully to the use of PROMPT technique to improve his engagement, sensorimotor organization and muscle memory for the production of word approximations and eventually word combinations to express his wants and needs. With the support and dedication of Aaron’s parents and the sharing of information with his professional team, Aaron received multiple opportunities every day to practice the sounds and words that became his lexicon for functional communication.
