A Caregiver's Guide to Understanding and Meeting the Challenges of Childhood Apraxia of Speech

Understanding your child's motor speech disorder, obtaining appropriate diagnosis and treatment, and creating a positive and effective communication environment in the home are challenging tasks for parents of children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech. The purpose of this seminar is to introduce parents to the world of motor speech disorders by explaining speech motor processes, sharing key diagnostic and treatment considerations and suggesting basic strategies for the development of positive communication experiences.

The terminology used in describing speech disorders in children is complex, especially when a diagnosis of CAS is considered. This seminar will provide explanations of the terms used to define pediatric language disorders as well as speech disorders of three basic types (phonological, motor planning/programming, dysarthria). A explanation of the neurological basis of normal speech development will precede a discussion of what goes wrong in CAS. Knowledge of current recommendations and broad treatment guidelines will be shared in an effort to maximize each parent's ability to advocate for his or her child and to develop and sense of partnership with the speech-language pathologist. Video-examples of children with CAS will be presented highlight characteristics of the disorder and to bring terminology and support strategies to life.

Learning Outcomes:

• Participants will understand the basic terminology used in describing language disorders and speech disorders in children and provide examples of each.
• Participants will demonstrate understanding of systems involved in speech motor control including basic anatomy, speech motor control centers in the brain and the contribution of sensory information.
• Participants will become familiar with the definition and key characteristics of CAS as well as the complexity of the diagnostic process.
• Participants will obtain information about effective treatment intervention that will allow them to become successful team members and advocates for their children with CAS.
